When in the South….

Maxine in the South After writing the previous article on how seniors are less adept at handling cold weather, it occurred to me that maybe that was the reason for the boom in retirement communities in the south.  Perhaps seniors, knowing they can no longer tolerate the extreme cold of northern winters, long for views where the only white powdery substance in sight is the sand on the beach or the pits on the golf course.

House in Ice StormIt’s always a beautiful sight to wake up in the early morning and peer outside your window to view the marvels of a newly-fallen, powdery white landscape.  Especially as a child.  Broken power lines, bursted water pipes, or fallen trees don’t even warrant a moment’s thought to the little ones eager to scurry out into their wintery playground.  Not only are children immune to the economic concerns of a winter storm, but it appears they may also have somewhat of a health advantage as well.

With so many Americans nearing retirement age, the real estate sector accomodating the housing needs of this age group appear to be quite busy.  The majority of the age-restricted communities being developed have concentrated their appeal on aesthetics, as well as offering a wide variety of physical and social activities — a seniorhoodTM playground.
