Back to School For Seniors

After many of Sun City Texas’s residents began requesting educational classes andseniorsatschool.jpg discussion among people their own age (55+), a private institution named Senior University, in Georgetown, Texas, which offers nonprofit and noncredit classes, was formed. This university allows these men and women an opportunity to get out of the house, meet new people, and continue their academic growth.

Senior University, founded in 1998, now has about 340 students attending. About 75% of the people attending are residents of Sun City Texas. The Senior University classes are offered at Southwestern University, First Baptist Church and the Sun City Social Center, all in Georgetown.

Instructors at the university are all volunteers and most are either retired or current college professors. The only fees required to attend these classes is a $50 annual fee and $60 per semester.

Many of the students say the classes are not only educational but social as well. Apparently, Sun City finds that Senior University has been very successful and is now looking to form similar partnerships with other colleges like the one Senior University has with Southwestern.

It’s nice to see that the active-adult communities are listening to those that live there. Though many residents are initially attracted to a community for its athletic amenities, having access to a continued education in that same environment will definately be a positive for those seniors wanting to remain both physically and mentally healthy.
